CNS Lifecare Program

A Long-Term Commitment To Improving Quality Of Life

Recovery from head injury is often difficult and uncertain. Each person who sustains a head injury, and each family who experiences the resulting struggles, is affected differently. Depending upon the severity and nature of the injury and the family situation, some individuals are able to regain a high level of independence and return to family life. Others may be unable to rejoin their families and require long-term supportive care.

Whatever the outcome of a severe brain injury, CNS LifeCare Programs provide long-term care options that focus on improving quality of life and enthusiastically affirms the value of each individual--from those who can enjoy the freedom of independent living with minimal supervision to those individuals who require constant care.

Support and Security for Independent Living

When individuals with brain injury have regained a high level of functioning following post-acute rehabilitation, they are often capable of living independently, but they may still require assistance in carrying out certain daily responsibilities. The CNS Assisted Community Living Program is designed to nurture independence, while addressing the realities of each individual's capabilities. If the individual desires to stay in close proximity to a CNS facility, we help establish an independent living situation for successful re-entry into our local community. If the individual prefers to return to their home community, the treatment team at CNS coordinates and trains high-quality local resources that can provide the necessary assistance and implement the CNS philosophy for successful independent living. Whatever the case, the CNS Assisted Community Living Program provides support and security while helping patients resume a productive, independent life.

The Comfort and Familiarity of Family-Style Living

Individuals with brain injury who are unable to return to living with their families can still achieve much of the fulfillment of family life through our Group Home Program.

In a comfortable, family-like setting, patients share not only the living environment, but responsibilities and daily chores. They learn to once again function as part of a family unit-building relationships and working together as a team. Through a structured program of daily activities, patients resume meaningful, well-rounded lives.

Patients also re-build work skills and self-esteem through supported employment within the community. They experience the pleasures of recreation through a wide variety of physical and social activities. They re-establish a world perspective through programs which highlight current events and special projects. They continue to improve their cognitive and physical skills through ongoing involvement in the activities of daily living and group therapeutics. And counseling is available to help address the ongoing emotional challenges of head injury.

For those patients who experience severe behavioral difficulties after rehabilitation, the CNS Behavioral Group Home includes the necessary structure as well as an ongoing behavior modification program focused on extinguishing inappropriate behaviors. A high staff/patient ratio ensures intensive, personalized attention. Through this specialized group home, patients with behavioral problems are able to experience all the benefits of family-style living while they continue to strive for improvement.

Working Toward Change with Those Slow to Recover

We believe that no matter how challenged an individual, his/her life has special significance and meaning. With that philosophy of respect as our foundation, CNS has developed a long-term care program that helps patients live a positive, meaningful life while working toward change--no matter how small.

The CNS Slow to Recover Program addresses the very real needs of recently injured persons such as those in Persistent Vegetative State, or those who have had rehabilitation but cannot return to an active life.

In addition to skilled nursing care, the CNS Slow to Recover Program includes a spectrum of therapies specifically tailored to each individual's level of functioning. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, recreational activities, range of motion and specialized splinting are integrated, when required, into the patient's program of care.

To maintain optimum health, programs for bowel and bladder care, skin care and oral hygiene are an important part of the patient's daily routine. And our consulting physicians provide the clinical evaluation and treatment necessary to avoid the frequent hospitalizations that can often accompany long-term disability.

The CNS Slow To Recover Program provides a high level of attentive, individualized care and is frequently less expensive than other similar programs.

With an exceptional staff, a warm, positive environment, and an attitude of respect and compassion, patients come to know that they occupy a place of importance at CNS.
