General Information
Irving, Texas is located between Dallas and Fort Worth and is adjacent to the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, one of the world's busiest air transportation hubs. Irving has over 100 restaurants, 35 hotels, and numerous shopping centers. There are several golf courses and lakes in the Irving area.
Irving is also home to Las Colinas, a well know business and residential center that includes, among other things, the world's largest equestrian sculpture, an equestrian center, a movie studio, golf courses (home to the PGA's Byron Nelson Golf Classic), shops and the offices of many national and international companies.
Culture and Recreation
Four major interstate highways provide quick and convenient travel out of Irving and into Dallas and Fort Worth. Both cities offer numerous museums (including the world-class Kimball Art Museum), two symphonies and two opera and ballet companies. Some of the places and events only a short drive away include:
Education
The Dallas/Ft. Worth area offers first-class university education at 13 community colleges and 19 universities including Southern Methodist University, Texas Christian University and the University of Texas - Arlington.
Economy
Dallas/Ft. Worth currently enjoys one of the nation's outstanding economies. The area has a diverse economic base, which inclludes oil, natural gas, cattle, cotton, banking, aerospace, electronics, food related products and apparel. Major companies with headquarters in Dallas are Dr. Pepper, J.C. Penny, American Airlines, Texas Instruments, Bell Helicopter and Dell Computers to name just a few. Dallas is also considered one of the world's most important clothing and apparel centers.
Health Care
Dallas/Ft. Worth is a national leader in health care services. It has six teaching hospitals (Baylor University Medical Center), one medical school (University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas) and five cardiac rehabilitation centers.

History

The town of Irving was founded in 1903 by J.O. Schulze and Otis Brown, who were part of an engineering crew charged with building the Rock Island Railroad's tracks between Fort Worth and Dallas. . . .
On November 8, 1902, the two men bought 80.21 acres from a Mr. Britain, paying $30 an acre for the land which became the original townsite of Irving. Two years earlier the land had been bought for $10 an acre, and it was covered mostly with heavy post oak timber. . . .
In seeking a name for the town, the partners made many suggestions to each other for a period of several months before agreeing on Irving. . . .
On December 19, 1903, the town was launched with a barbecue and sale of town lots. The weather was balmy and a crowd of over 150 had gathered for the auction. . . .
The city was incorporated in April of 1914, but remained a very small town (1950 population was 2,621) until the mid-50s when it began its phenomenal growth. Today, Irving's population numbers over 150,000.
