Practice Experience:
Seventeen years as a practicing general pediatrician with case load ranging from premature infant with RDS to adolescence and everything in between.
Solo for one year, then partnership with my brother.
Since 1978, practice has been a three doctor group.
1973: Started and developed a " two and one half" level NICU and maintained it until attracting a Neonatologist to take over in 1982.
1976: Became involved in the Family Practice Residency Program in McAllen sponsored by the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio (UTHSC/SA).
1978: Developed an outreach Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Clinic for Santa Rose Hospital with Dr. Tom Williams. I maintained this weekly clinic until June, 1989.
1979: Became Associate Clinical Professor for UTHSC/SA and taught part-time at the Family Practice Residency Program in McAllen, Texas.
1979: Started the Muscular Dystrpophy Clinic for the Rio Grande Valley which is still conducted at the Family Practice Residency Clinic.
1984: Developed an outreach Pediatric Rheumatology Clinic with Dr. Earl Brewer, a Pediatric Rheumatologist with the Kelsey Seibold Clinic in Houston.
1985: Accepted responsibility for the medical care of several autistic adults who are in a live-in program at the Mental Health Mental Retardation (MHMR) center in Edinburg, Texas.
1987: Developed the "Valley Pediatric Coordinated Care Clinic" (VPCCC), a non-profit foundation, when the Easter Seal Society could no longer finance the Rheumatology Clinic. The VPCCC consisted of a local team which includes an Occupational Therapist, a Social Worker, Physical Therapist, and myself. This team assisted the subspecialist in seeing patients at the VPCCC facility. It has since been absorbed into the UTHSC/SA system of outreach clinics.
1987: Developed a Pediatric Pulmonology Clinic with Dr. Victor German from UTHSC/SA.
1988: I was asked to be a member of a task force for the State Department of Health Bureau of the Chronically Ill and Disabled Children (CIDC). I was one out of five doctors in the stat to be asked to distill suggestions and make final recommendations to the State Board of Health.
