Course 1

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Course Description

This course will review literature pertaining to post-concussion syndrome as a diagnostic entity, tracing its origins back to the 1800's. The participants will be provided with a working definition of post-concussion syndrome and introduced to the terminology "mild traumatic brain injury" (MTBI) as recommended by the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. The course reviews the neuroanatomical and neurophysiological ramifications of MTBI. Factors having an impact on the outcome of MTBI are identified. The treatment of MTBI will be reviewed from the perspective of medical and pharmacological coordination, psychological intervention, vestibular dysfunction, cognitive/communicative intervention, cardiovascular endurance intervention, vision therapy, and vocational rehabilitation.

Course 2

Applied Behavior Analysis

Course Description

This course will review the principles of applied behavior analysis and how it can be effectively used in brain injury rehabilitation. Participants will gain an understanding of the underlying mechanisms that contribute to the brain-behavior relationship. The potential positive and negative effects of medication and the importance of close monitoring will be reviewed. The course will describe the primary ethical concerns with implementing a sound behavioral program. Ten general management guidelines that will help reduce the occurrence of behavior problems is presented. The ABC's (antecedent, behavior and consequence) principles of applied behavior analysis will be outlined, as well as how to write an effective behavior plan with a variety of procedures. In conjunction, a number of data collection methods that allow for an efficient review of behavior programs will be taught. Lastly, is a review of the "assault cycle" and how to prevent a crisis situation and safely intervene if necessary.

Course 3

Brain Injury and Rehabilitation: An Overview

Course Description

This course reviews various types of traumatic brain injury and their common physical, cognitive and behavioral consequences. The participant will receive current epidemiological information about head injury and be able to discuss common causes of traumatic brain injury, it's costs and various funding sources. The course outlines the continuum of care from the initial emergency services to home and work re-entry. Factors that contribute to the successful rehabilitation and recovery of a person from traumatic brain injury are discussed. Lastly, the most common professional services associated with traumatic brain injury survival and rehabilitation are reviewed.

Course 4

Brain Anatomy and Function

Course Description

This course will review various types of brain injury, disability assessment scales and brain function. Participants will be provided with descriptions of open and closed head injuries and various types of more specific brain injury. The neuophysiological mechanisms of brain injury will be reviewed, including digital animations. Various disability evaluation scales will be outlined so that participants are familiar with popular assessment instruments in the field. Lastly, the differences between right and left-hemisphere brain function and the role of each major brain lobe (area) in neurobehavioral skills will be reviewed.
