NEW! CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE

Applied Behavior Analysis

This course reviews the principles of applied behavior analysis and how it can be effectively
used in brain injury rehabilitation. Participants will gain an understanding of the underlying
mechanisms that contribute to the brain-behavior relationship. The potential positive and negative
effects of medication and the importance of close monitoring is also reviewed. The course
describes the primary ethical concerns with a behavioral program. Ten general
management guidelines that help reduce the occurrence of behavior problems is presented. The
ABC's (antecedent, behavior and consequence) principles of applied behavior analysis are
outlined, as well as how to write an effective behavior plan with a variety of procedures. A number
of data collection methods that allow for an efficient review of behavior programs are taught.
Lastly, is a review of the "assault cycle," how to prevent a crisis situation, and how to safely
intervene.

This course is certified for 2.0 (02.00-05A-07-02-73) CCM (Certified Case Manager),
(02.00-02D-07-02-70) CRC (Certified Rehabilitation Counselor) and (02.00-02G-07-02-71) CDMS
(Certified Disablity Management Specialist) continuing education units.

NEW RESEARCH ARTICLES

1. Neural Stem Cells Improve Motor Function in Brain Injuries

Neural stem cells, transplanted into injured brains, survive, proliferate, and improve brain
function in laboratory models according to research based at the University of Pennsylvania School
of Medicine.

2. Is the Roller Coaster G-force Threat All Spin?

According to researchers at the University of Pennsylvania medical science does not support the
notion that roller coasters produce forces great enough to harm the brains of riders.

Read the full article at:
http://neuroskills.com/pr-coaster.shtml

3. Mild Brain Injury May Render Brain Cells Vulnerable to Immune System Attack

Duke University Medical Center researchers have discovered that a seemingly mild "insult" to the
brain could sensitize neurons to attack by immune system proteins that are otherwise protective.
