NEW RESEARCH ARTICLES ON THE WEB SITE

1. Stem Cells, Forged into Neurons, Show Promise for Brain Repair

In a set of meticulous experiments, scientists have demonstrated
the ability of human embryonic stem cells to develop into nascent
brain cells and, seeded into the intact brains of baby mice, further
develop into healthy, functioning neural cells.

http://www.neuroskills.com/pr-stemneurons.shtml

2. Study of Key Enzyme Sheds New Light on Programmed Cell Death
and May Lead to New Drugs for Reducing the Severity of Brain Injury

Critical new data on a complex enzyme that lies at the crossroad
between cell suicide and tumor suppression has opened a promising
new front in the battle to find effective treatments for brain
injury.

Read the full article at:
http://www.neuroskills.com/pr-dapk.shtml

3. Study Puts a Damper on Extent of New Brain Cell Growth

Neuroscientists have not found any evidence that adult primates
are able to create new neurons in the most sophisticated part
of the brain, the neocortex, according to the results of a study
published in the journal Science.

http://www.neuroskills.com/pr-newneurons.shtml

4. Protection After Traumatic Brain Injury

IVAX Corporation announced that researchers at the University of
Miami found IVAX' talampanel neuroprotective after traumatic brain
injury (TBI). As published in the Journal of Neurotrauma, in
pre-clinical animal studies the total contusion area was reduced
by approximately 70% when talampanel was administered 30 minutes
after injury as compared to a placebo treatment.

5. Cells From Human Umbilical Cord Help Rats Recover From
Brain Injury Faster

Rats that suffered from brain injury recovered much of their
neurological function quicker following intraveneous injection
with cells from human umbilical cord blood.

VISUAL SYSTEM DEFICITS

Visual disturbances are one of the most common consequences
of a traumatic brain injury. Our new visual systems deficits
graphic illustrates the anatomy of the visual system,
locations of lesions (injury) and consequent deficits.
