From Tech Trailblazer to Stroke Survivor: Jimmy Treybig’s Journey of Resilience

CNS Patient, Jimmy TreybigJimmy Treybig, a pioneer of modern technology turned pickleball enthusiast, faced one of life’s toughest challenges at the age of 84. In March 2024, while driving home from Houston to Austin with his wife, Drew, Jimmy suddenly lost feeling in his right arm and began showing signs of aphasia, a condition that impairs speech and communication.

At Dell Seton Medical Center (DSMC), Jimmy spent three weeks undergoing treatment for a stroke and subdural hematoma, a type of bleeding near the brain. Dr. Doan, Centre for Neuro Skills’ (CNS) Austin Medical Director and internist at DSMC, recommended Jimmy for CNS’ post-acute rehabilitation program.

Jimmy began his recovery with three weeks of acute rehabilitation at Central Texas Rehabilitation Hospital (CTRH). In May, Jimmy started post-acute therapy at CNS Austin’s Day Treatment program. When he began therapy, Jimmy couldn’t walk, use his right arm, or communicate clearly. Drew joined him for the first few weeks of his outpatient care, soon placing her full trust in the CNS therapy team.

“I felt safe watching them take care of Jimmy, and I became hopeful again,” Drew shared.

While Jimmy missed playing pickleball with his friends, he soon discovered a different kind of community at CNS. With the support of his therapists, he worked to regain strength in his right hand and wrist and slowly improved his speech. More than the physical progress, Jimmy found meaning in the camaraderie among both staff and fellow patients.

“You have to celebrate the little things with each other,” Jimmy said. “The people at CNS are what made it such a supportive environment.”

CNS Patient, Jimmy TreybigAs a lifelong mentor and leader, Jimmy embraced the opportunity to support other patients during recovery. He enjoyed giving encouragement and participating in the many recreational activities organized by CNS, such as costume days and miniature golf outings. This sense of togetherness brought strength and hope to both Jimmy and Drew during a difficult chapter of their lives.

Today, the couple enjoys daily walks together and is looking forward to resuming family trips with their two sons. Jimmy and Drew celebrate the wins no matter what size, from his ability to cut food to being able to celebrate the holidays with family. They are grateful for each step forward and for the community that helped make it possible.
