This Mother’s Day is one Clara Nunez will never forget. In January, Clara’s mom, Maria Perez, survived a car accident that resulted in an emergency spinal fusion surgery. Doctors said the injury caused paralysis in both of Maria's legs. Heartened by the support she’s received since her mom suffered a severe spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury, Clara feels grateful for her community.
“I’ve worked with patients and their families every day for nearly 14 years,” said Clara, a Case Manager Clinic Aide at the Centre for Neuro Skills’ Bakersfield clinic. “But I never imagined we’d face this tragedy.”
Maria moved in with Clara and began Day Treatment neurorehabilitation at CNS’ Bakersfield clinic in March.
“In the beginning, it was hard for all of us,” said Clara, who has two sisters.
At first, Clara wanted to stay by her mother’s side during therapy sessions, noting how her mother cried in the car and rarely smiled. Maria required a wheelchair and assistance doing simple tasks at home, such as showering or getting out of bed by herself. Through counseling therapy, Maria learned methods to cope that made her feel more comfortable talking about her accident.
This Mother’s Day, Maria can walk with a walker and continues to progress in her recovery. Clara couldn’t be more grateful for the emotional support she’s received from her coworkers, boyfriend, friends and family.
“Now I have hope for the future,” said Clara.
