Course Description

Environmental validity refers to the degree a physical environment replicates the patient’s real-world environment. Environmental validity is an essential consideration in brain injury patients rehabilitation because it can help ensure that the clinical rehabilitation interventions are effective and relevant, thus improving patients chance of successful recovery. In today’s post-brain injury environment, the challenge is to transition individuals effectively and efficiently from the hospital to home while providing the training and treatment that will have a long-term functional impact. Studies have shown that residential treatment has proven to be an essential step on the path to greater independence. A critical aspect of brain injury rehabilitation is providing patients with an environment conducive to their recovery and goals. Family training, social reintegration and therapeutic programs all contribute to the comprehensive treatment generalization.

Following the presentation, participants should be able to:

  • Compare the differences between a typical medical continuum of care vs. a brain injury continuum of care
  • Recognize residential treatment’s role in the brain injury continuum of care
  • Define environmental validity
  • Identify and employ program factors that contribute to functional gains for longterm success
  • Describe how residential treatment promotes environmental validity better than home settings
