Thinking Outside the Box: Case Managers Go the Distance for Their Patients

Case Manager, Jill Harrell and IT Josh WrightWhen someone experiences a brain injury, getting them back into everyday life is crucial. Such was the case of a Texas woman who worked loading cargo on the docks of a major airport. She fell, hit her head, and came to Centre for Neuro Skills’ Houston clinic. As soon as she stabilized, Clinical Case Manager Jill Harrell recognized her fear of returning to work. She launched into action.

“She was emotional, fearful, and refused to travel” Jill recalls. “But our team thought outside the box to help her progress.” CNS counselors accompanied her to the airport, calming her fears as she revisited the site of her devastating accident. Jill and her team innovated. Their strategy enabled the woman to reintegrate into her community.

A hallmark of Centre for Neuro Skills’ patient care is reflected in the phrase “Find A Way,” a company mantra that Jill’s team exemplified.

CNS case managers are creative problem solvers. If a unique solution builds life skills and leads to independence, they’ll go for it. Jill recently helped a patient master Uber technology to accommodate shopping and appointments post rehabilitation. Jill extended this training to all Houston outpatients. Many aren’t driving yet but Uber will take them to family and social events – a key reintegration step for patients.  

“Knowing that we can find a way and see it through is a great feeling,” she said.

Jill related another beyond-the-call-of-duty story that demonstrates extraordinary willingness. Houston’s IT Support Specialist, Josh Wright, braved a torrid storm and drove to a patient’s home to repair his internet, enabling him to participate in telerehab that afternoon.

The patient, Jill says, “thanks us day and night.”

This “Find a Way” ethic “allows patients to get stronger and meet goals,” she observed.  “Sometimes they complain, but they soon see why we have discipline and a holistic approach. We’re given latitude for innovative ideas that for work for each person.”
